About us

OCTA BJJ is a one-of-a-kind Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy located in the Town of Oakville's core. We are located only blocks away from Oakville Go Station and the Dorval QEW ramp, as well as surrounded by numerous service/product providers.

Our academy provides a new experience from the beginning, with classes designed to guide the students through their BJJ journeys every step of the way. Our curriculum covers distinct techniques for youth, beginners, intermediate, advanced, and competitor students. No matter what your goal, we have a class to match your needs.

Our mission is to practice a modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu without losing the traditional roots of our martial art. Evolving from the “old ways” of teaching, we are focused on the student's development while continually respecting their individuality. We are the right school for anyone interested in learning all aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, from self-defense to wellness.

At OCTA BJJ we follow the teachings of grandmasters Carlos and Helio Gracie, but we also understand BJJ’s deep Japanese martial arts roots and influence. Count Koma (Mitsuyo “Octavio” Maeda) himself was a Kodokan Judo black-belt, and he was responsible for introducing the Gracie family to Jiu-Jitsu. Consequently, we continue to follow BJJ’s strong heritage of good principles such as: honor, discipline, cooperation, loyalty, respect, and cleanliness.

Our methodology is based on the traditional training, but we do not ignore evolution. Our students, after learning the foundations of BJJ, are encouraged to expand their knowledge by experimenting with the techniques. We are also opened to learning from others, since we believe everyone has something valuable to offer. Visiting other academies, competing, and attending seminars are great ways to speed up the learning process, and we welcome every opportunity to expand our knowledge. As such, our students are always encouraged to think outside-the-box.

We are committed to providing a safe environment for training. That means our students are not exposed to fight simulations or live rolls without passing through our Beginners Program first. There they will learn basic techniques and go through an introductory period to understand the foundations of self-defense. Our programs follow a progressive method in-which our students always know where they are in the curriculum, the requirements for achieving the next level, and how to fulfill those requirements so they can easily track their progress in BJJ.

We are also part of the FVTEAM International Association, a group of academies under the guidance and mentorship of Professor Flavius Virginio (find more info here), a Ricardo De la Riva’s fifth degree black belt. This gives us the opportunity to share knowledge with other academies around the world and learn from each other.

Our learning process follows the plan below:

In our beginner and intermediate programs, we cover in details more than 120 techniques. Every technique is also available in our online training, which is 100% free to all our members. Once our students move to advanced levels, they are presented to the core principle groups and how they apply to the techniques they’ve learned so far.
